Re: A tirade against your TV show Kum Kum Bhagya
I hope this letter gets your TV broadcasting equipment in good working condition. Better still, I hope the behind-the-scenes personnel is not grappling with burn-out. Inooro TV, allow me to rap your programme director on the knuckles because one of your shows is not in sync with the reality.
Mr Director, I will make no bones about congratulating you. Your work is laudable. Unfortunately, RMS has had its worst moments in its broadcasting history. Let us revisit a suchlike moment. In the late 2000s, if my memory serves me right, the RMS-owned radio station called Inooro FM featured play-by-play vernacular football commentators. Arguably, this is, perhaps, the most ill-conceived programme in Inooro FM’s history.
Inooro FM’s commentating on the English Premier League games was like a forced cough. The then Inooro FM’s me-too versions of especially famed football commentator Mohammed Juma Njuguna were out-and-out awkward. Imagine this scenario. Mohammed Juma Njuguna: “…Drogba na mpira, anakwenda pale, anaangalia apatie nani…” Damnable Inooro FM commentating (I vividly remember this; it is not imagined): “…na mubira, niarathie, niarathie, [ararora anengererie muthaki uriku]…
Mr Director, I recalled the aforementioned commentating when I first watched Kum Kum Bhagya, a show aired on Inooro TV at around 8 p.m. The packaging is terribly wrong. Wait, is your target market interested in it after all? Arguable.
Mr Director, you have possibly heard the joke about Kenyans’ sojourn in India vis-a-vis in the United States. It is said that Kenyans start speaking English tinged with American accents hot on the heels of landing in Kenya after a brief visit to the US. Interestingly, no Kenyan has ever spoken a language packed with Indian accents regardless of how many years they have stayed in India.
Mr Director, Kenyan and Indian cultures are different. For instance, in Kenya male suitors pay the dowry. In India, females pay the dowry instead. I will not remind you about the religious differences. Kum Kum Bhagya revolves around these aspects.
Long story short, Mr Director. In the context of the Kenyan audience, Kum Kum Bhagya explores a tired theme–marriage. Films are supposed to be educative and entertaining. The boring entertainment aside, there is absolutely nothing constructive for Inooro TV’s ardent viewers–unrelatable at least.
For instance, Mr Director, I have seen scenes of a grandmother massaging her grown-up grandson. Who does that in Kikuyuland? It is an abomination! Or, better yet, our Kikuyu grandmothers are too busy for such nonsense. Should I mention the Indian actors with ear studs? There are scenes of softies; men submitting themselves to female lovers. The realistic Inooro TV series Uriru wa Wendo is better off doing it.
Mr Director, here is the idiomatic straw that broke the idiomatic camel’s back. In the Indian TV Show Kum Kum Bhagya, there are damnable scenes of grown-up single men living under the same roof alongside their parents. In India? Yes. In Kenya? Hell no! Not just in Kikuyuland. Even other Kenyan tribes get the sulks.
Mr Director, I have seen my relatives flipping through the TV channels whenever your show Kum Kum Bhagya gatecrashes at mealtimes. FYI, I like Indian content. But Inooro TV’s voice over artists renders Indian content soulless. If you must, bring us DJayed Indian content or content with English subtitles. Otherwise, leave Indian content to experienced Kenyan DJs Afro and Smith.
Mr Director, wake up and smell the coffee. The show is ill-thought. You might want to conduct a feasibility study on social media, especially on Facebook wherein you have 136,000 likes. Believe me, you will be surprised to see that, indeed, Kum Kum Bhagya is a theatrical, forced dry cough that cannot even scare away a determined housefly nestled on your tinder-dry lips.
